Castle to Castle 2011, Race Report
What a weekend! The weather forecast was predicting wind from the NW and rain for Sunday on the Saturday but as time went on the forecast was gradually easing, at the final check on Sunday at 07:00 there was no wind and blue sunny sky’s however the forecast was for a front to move over at 13:00. The race was on!
All the boats arrived and after a little hiccup of a trailer driver going AWOL we had our briefings and were out on the water for the start. The start was a little late but they were off at 11:22 just 7 minuets late.
The rain came and the wind picked up and swung more southerly so as the race progressed the conditions got a little choppy. Communications between the lead support boat and Caernarfon was constant and the gradually stiffening breeze made the going tough for the rowers with wind against tide but they all did magnificently well ploughing through the chop. As the crews heard the cannons sound at the finish line there was much rejoicing and camaraderie as everyone cheered in the other crews.
After trailering the boats and getting dry clothing in the club house with drinks in hand there were tales of monster waves and daring does. After food and presentations, from RWYC commodore and the Royal towns Mayor, the smiling weather beaten faces speaking of the next rowing event drifted away on their journeys home.
A big thank you to all who took part see you on the water soon and hope you will come again next year to see what the Menai has to offer.
Feedback on this event is always welcome.
