Aberdyfi near the end of the men's race

Record numbers of rowers turned out for the opening race of the WSRA League held at Newport last Sunday. With over 50 teams competing in four races on a challenging rough sea and against a brisk N.W. wind.

In the first race 14 ladies teams competed over the 3-mile course set across the Newport Bay and around the notorious Carreg Y Drywy. The Newport supa veteran ladies (rowers over the age of 50) put on an impressive burst of speed outpacing the leading boats to pull some five lengths ahead of the rest of the field. Their superior skill and experience was plain to see as they powered ahead to win by twenty lengths at the finishing line ahead of Aberdyfi and Llangwm.

No less than 22 teams including yoles and longboats competed in the men's race. Their triangular 4-mile course took them out to sea before turning north back round the Drywy to take up the same course as the ladies race.. The Aberdyfi boys pushed on to hold an unassailable lead of some 6 lengths to finish victorious ahead of Llangwm and Aberystwyth.

Three teams competed in the junior race. All under the age of 16 and many racing for the first time, performed admirably in the challenging seas to complete the 2-mile course. At the finish it was Aberdyfi A followed by Aberdyfi B with Newport winning the mixed category in third position.

The most closely fought race of the day was the mixed event. After a poor start there was little to separate the 21 teams over the 3 mile course as they headed towards the first turn. Aberdyfi took the honours followed by llangwm Broke Backs and Aberystwyth A. This was followed by a mass finish as the rest of the field finished closely to thrill the large crowd of supporters cheering in the boats at the end to a great days racing.

Congratulations to the new club Llangranog competing for the first time.
